Pengertian Narrative Text

Narrative text is a story of connected events, presented in a sequence of spoken or written words, and/or in a sequence of (moving) pictures.

Narrative Text adalah sebuah cerita yang terdiri dari rangkaian beberapa kejadian atau peristiwa yang disajikan secara beruntun atau secara kronologi baik secara lisan, tulisan, ataupun dengan gambar bergerak.

Tujuan Narrative Text

The purpose of narrative text is to entertain the viewers or the readers.

Tujuan dari Narrative Text adalah untuk menghibur para pendengar ataupun para pembaca dengan kejadian atau peristiwa yang menarik yang terdapat di dalam cerita dan pesan atau hikmah yang terkandung secara tersirat di dalam suatu cerita narrative.

Generic Structure of Narrative Text

Generic Structure dari Narrative Text terdiri dari tiga bagian, yaitu:

-          Orientation: Pada bagian ini penulis mulai memperkenalkan tokoh, latar, dan setting dari sebuah cerita. Dalam paragraf ini biasanya pembaca akan menemukan jawaban dari pertanyaan who, where, dan when.

-          Complication: Pada bagian ini pembaca akan mulai menemukan masalah – masalah yang semakin memuncak dan berakhir pada klimaks yaitu puncak dari permasalahan yang ada pada cerita.

-          Resolution: Pada bagian ini solusi – solusi dari masalah – masalah yang timbul pada bagian complication akan muncul dan masalah mulai mereda.

-          Reorientation: Bagian ini merupakan bagian penutup dimana penulis memberikan pesan atau hikmah kepada para pembaca secara tersirat dan pembaca akan menyimpulkan apakah cerita tersebut berakhir dengan happy endingataukah sad ending.

Ciri – Ciri Narrative Text

Narrative Text memiliki beberapa ciri sebagai berikut:

-          Fokus hanya pada satu tokoh atau pelaku cerita dan menggunakan sudut pandang orang pertama tunggal, orang pertama jamak, orang ketiga tunggal, atau orang ketiga jamak (I, we, she, he, it, they).

-          Menggunakan Simple Past Tense dan Past Continous Tense karena menceritakan kejadian yang telah lampau.

-          Menggunakan Conjunction atau kata sambung, misalnya ‘and’, ‘but’, ‘while’, ‘although’, dan lain – lain.

-          Menggunakan kata sifat (Adjective: happy, bad, slow), kata keterangan (Adverb: happily, curiously, slowly), dan frasa kata (Noun Phrase: happy girl, bad guy, slow response).

The Ant and The Grasshopper

One day in summer, in a field, a grasshopper was about to hop, chirp and sing to its heart’s content. An ant passed by, bearing along with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to the nest.“Why not come and chat with me,” said the grasshopper, “instead of toiling and moiling in that way?”“I am helping to lay up food for the winter,” answered the ant, “and recommend you to do the same.”“Why bother about winter?” asked the grasshopper; we have got plenty of food at present.” The Ant went on its way and continued its toil. Everyday, when the winter came the grasshopper found itself dying of hunger while it saw the ants distributing, corn and grain from the stores they had collected in the summer.

The Crow and The Jug

One day, on a hot day, a thirsty crow flew over a field looking for water. For a long time, she could not find any. She left very exhausted and almost gave up. Suddenly, she saw water jug below her. She, then, flew straight down to see if there was any water inside. It was surprised because there was some water inside the jug. The crow tried to push her head into the jug. Sadly she found that the neck of the jug was too narrow. Then she tried to push the jug down for the water to flow out but she found that the jug was too heavy. The crow thought hard for a whileand waslooking around. She saw some pebbles and suddenly had a good idea. She started picking up the pebbles one by one, dropping it into the jug. The water level kept rising as more and more pebbles filled the jug. Soon it was high enough for the crow to drink. “It’s working” she said.
